How to use V Lookup in Excel

vlookup

Example:

we are checking the email id of Employee against Employee ID.

Employee id 695 is checked for Email id and result is d@ab.com

How to do

Formula           =VLOOKUP(A12,A2:D10,3,0)

Result              d@ab.com

Where A12 is the look up value whose corresponding value need to be looked up

A2:D10 is range of table array where value has to be looked upon

3 is the Column no. from column A in which value has to be looked against A12

0 is the Range look up, put 0 to get the exact match.

Precautions

Ensure the Cell value of Lookup_value cell and output cell are exactly same.

Common errors:           Space in the start or end of the lookup_value or data retrieval cell

Lookup_value cell is in number format whereas data retrieval cell is in text format

Ensure Lookup_value column is before the Column_index_num

If you are planning to drag the formula ensure to put $ before and after the column alphabet, this will ensure no change in the values of tables arrays because of the dragging.
